Der Hersteller Fisher-Price gehört zu den bekannten Marken in der Spielwarenbranche. Fisher-Price erstellt sein Spielzeug mit viel Hingabe. Das Unternehmen möchte, dass ihre Produkte nicht nur pädagogisch wertvoll sind, sondern auch die Neugier der Kleinen weckt. Im firmeneigenen Play Lab wird deswegen regelmäßig getestet wie die Kinder mit dem Produkt spielen und das Spielzeug entdecken. Über 3.500 Kinder testen jedes Jahr über 1.200 Spielzeugideen. Natürlich werden auch die Eltern in die Entstehung eines Produktes integriert. Anhand ihrer Erwartungen an ein Produkt und Bedürfnisse nehmen die Designer und Entwickler Anpassungen vor.
Bereits 1930 nahm sich Herr Fisher vor, Spielzeug für Kinder zu entwickeln, welches die Fantasie anregt und etwas Neues, Überraschendes und Lustiges macht. Mit Irving Price und Helen Schelle entwickelte Herr Fisher das erste Spielzeugkonzept mit dem Namen „16 hopefuls“ (16 Hoffnungsträger). Die 16 hopefuls waren ein niedliches Entenpaar als Nachziehtier.
Im Laufe der Zeit erweitere Fisher-Price sein Sortiment um Babyausstattung, verlor dabei aber nie die ursprüngliche Idee des Gründers.
Im Jahr 1943 wurde nach einem Jahrzehnt am Markt die Spielwarenproduktion unterbrochen, um die gesamte Fabrik in den Dienst des Krieges zu stellen. Nur wenige Jahre später wurde die Spielzeugproduktion wieder aufgenommen und das Material Kunststoff für sich entdeckt.
Um das Spielzeug noch weiter zu verbessern, sahen die Entwickler den Kindern beim Spielen zu. Durch diese Idee entstand 1961 das Fisher-Price Play Lab. Das heute noch den Designern ermöglicht das Spielzeug optimal an die Bedürfnisse der Kinder und Eltern anzupassen.
Über 60-Jahre nach der Gründung von Fisher-Price ging das Unternehmen neue Wege und wurde Teil der Mattel-Gruppe.
Die neue Smart-Stages-Technologie ist ein weiterer Schritt in der Unternehmensgeschichte. Die Smart-Stages-Technologie ermöglicht das Spielzeug, an den Entwicklungsstand des Kindes anzupassen und so dem Kind entwicklungsgerechte Spielmöglichkeiten zu bieten.
Die Forschung gehört bei Fisher-Price zum Herzstück der Produktentwicklung. 1961 war Fisher Price das erste Unternehmen, welches Kinder auf dem eigenen Firmengelände Spielzeuge testen lässt. Sie beobachten, wie Babys zum ersten Mal nach einem Spielzeug greifen oder staunen über die Vorstellungskraft eines Kindes. Fisher-Price hat das Ziel Spielzeug zu entwickeln, welches den hohen Ansprüchen gerecht wird, pädagogisch wertvoll ist sowie Kinder fesseln und begeistern kann. Bisher haben über 1 Million Babys, Kleinkinder und Kinder im Vorschulalter Spielzeuge im firmeneigenen Play Lab getestet.
Die Produktideen von Fisher-Price entstehen oftmals aus den Bedürfnissen der Entwickler und Designer.
Die Fisher-Price-Produktdesignerin Linda C. hat durch ihren Sohn Jake die Inspiration für den Rock ’n Play Sleeper bekommen. Dadurch dass Jake als Baby einen sauren Reflux hatte, sollte sein Kopf erhöht liegen. Es gab derzeit aber nichts auf dem Markt, das dieses Problem lösen könnte. So entwickelte Linde selbst ein Produkt und stellte diese Idee im Unternehmen vor.
Nach anfänglichen Bedenken machte sich das Design- und Entwicklungsteam viele Gedanken über die bestmögliche Umsetzung. Der entstandene Prototyp erhielten einige Eltern zum Ausprobieren und waren begeistert. Nach kleineren Anpassungen war der Rock ‘n Play Sleeper von Fisher-Price marktreif.
